Although the Sundance Film Festival will look very different this year, this festival has been a platform for independent voices for decades. Springing from the Sundance Institute developed in 1980 by Robert Redford, the Sundance Festival is a week-long showcase for new American independent narrative and documentary films, in addition to a program of international films. It is the largest independent film festival in the U.S. and presents both short and feature length work.
When: January 28th-February 3rd, 2021
Where (Usually): Park City, Salt Lake City & the Sundance Resort all in Utah
Where (2021): Digital edition will take place in 24 states, including Utah, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, California, Texas, and Florida. The digital event, which will allow global audiences to take part through a custom designed online platform (festival.sundance.org), will also include screenings in drive-in theaters, independent arthouse cinemas, and cultural organizations.
Schedule
The 70+ feature films will premiere online in dedicated time slots. They will follow live Q&A sessions. Multiple films will premiere at the same time every few hours to “preserve the energy of a festival”. They will also be available on demand for a span of 24 hours after their initial screenings. The Short Film and Indie series, which includes about 50 short films, will be available on demand on the platform for the entirety of the Festival. The Festival will include a Festival Village that allows everyone to join in on conversations, musical performances, and other programming that are hosted by partners and sponsors of the Festival.
