“Abortion Helpline, This is Lisa” centers on the agonizing injustices for poor women seeking abortions, told through the lens of call-center workers at the Women’s Medical Fund. In 1976, the Hyde Amendment was passed, preventing reproductive health centers from providing federal funding, including Medicaid, to abortion-seeking women. The director’s use of archival footage displays gross political negligence and the discriminating nature of this act. The endangered pregnant women who call nonstop and the counselor’s inability to finance their abortions creates an excruciatingly painful tension. The result is a gut-wrenching congestion of moments at the expense of poor women, mostly from black communities who are left at the mercy of their bodies. Geeta Gandbhir delivers a gripping story of reconciliation as Mexican deportees cope in the aftermath of deportation. She treads with curiosity and deft, peering through the eyes of women and men yanked away from their American lives and families. Striking shots in Tijuana deliver a unique deconstruction of the physical challenges each deportee faces; yet, the true emotional-punch comes from testimonials revealing the grief and “grey-cloud” felt in this new, unchartered reality. “Do Not Split” is a visceral report on the 2019 protests in Hong Kong set off by an extradition bill in Mainland China. Director Anders Hammer vividly broadcasts the plight of students and activists calling for justice against a bedlam of police brutality. Through extensive, knee-jerking footage of tear-gas, frantic crowds, and piercing sounds of explosions, Hammer transports us to the chaotic Hong Kong streets, as protestors are beaten, arrested, and suffocated right before our eyes. Hammer reproduces the voice of this leaderless protest through first-hand narration by individual activists and students, bringing an authenticity and rawness that news and media outlets could not.
